How I Found The Perfect "Hair Ball" Gown And Wig

The day after the Southern California Writers' Conference in Palm Springs last October, my boyfriend and I decided to unwind with one of our favorite passtimes, browsing antique stores in Riverside, CA. And suddenly there it was, on a downstairs rack of vintage gowns, the same color I'd been wearing to all my Hot Water events, turquoise to match the book cover, of course. Only this was a light turquoise, shimmery and metallic! And only $25! Uh, oh... a size 5-6. Could it possibly fit? Drum roll as I tried it on in the nearest fitting room. And, yes, it fit, barely, as long as I didn't breathe too deeply.

Then, a few booths down, the perfect silver sequined purse and gorgeous rhinestone bling, bling necklace and matching earrings - which cost more than the dress, but what the heck! When else would I get to go to a "Hair Ball"?

Hair Ball. I certainly don't have what you'd call BIG HAIR. Hmm, use lots of goop and spike it up? I'd figure it out later. Meanwhile, I found silver bling, bling heels, long silver gloves and ordered a leopard fur stole (fake, but lovely) to go with the Pulpwood Queens' theme. (I never saw so much leopard in one place as I did this past weekend!)

Still, what to do about my hair? My sister to the rescue. She had won this zany turquoise wig at some crazy event where she lives in Morro Bay, CA, and brought it to me at Christmas.

Voila, the outfit!

WE HAD A BALL!
